The Experience
Each winter, large pods of humpback and sperm whales follow the herring into the fjords around Tromsø. The feeding season typically runs from October to February, with concentrations highest in November and December.
This is a private departure. The vessel, the crew, and the marine biologist guide are yours alone. The boat is a purpose-built research vessel designed for these waters, equipped with a hydrophone so you can hear, not just see, the whales below.
What to Expect
Departures leave from Tromsø harbour early in the morning. The search area varies with conditions; the guide reads the water and the forecast, not a fixed map. A hot lunch is prepared aboard while you are at sea.
Whales are wildlife. Sightings are not guaranteed, though close encounters with humpbacks are common during the peak weeks. Our guide will discuss what has been observed in the days before your departure.
Season
The season runs from October to February. The best concentration of whales in recent years has been in the Kvænangen and Kaldfjord areas.
